Book Commentary Review for “Sins of the Family” (May 5, 2022)

Will an investigative reporter, unafraid of untangling stories and getting to the bottom of the truth, be able to digest the disturbing truth her father has buried in the past? Sins of the Family by Hy Conrad is a gripping tale with a strong appeal to fans of thrillers and mysteries.

Life hasn’t been easy for Callie McFee, an investigative journalist from Austin, Texas. She drinks a bit too much, often relies on a pill to go to sleep, and has been dealing with unresolved issues with her father. Coming across murder stories is rare but not unheard of in her field. However, when she decides to uncover the story of Trevor Birdsong, a lifestyle marketer who hangs himself after losing millions in stocks, courtesy of his DUI arrest, she comes across sinister secrets from her father’s past – ones that can land him in prison. Will Callie find reasons to connect the suicide story to a planned murder committed because of Trevor’s office scandal, or will she go down a path she’ll end up regretting?

Sins of the Family by Hy Conrad is a captivating tale of loyalties, family secrets, and murder, and it follows a genuinely flawed and likeable female protagonist. The narrative is psychologically robust and readers will enjoy following Callie as she struggles with disturbing questions about her father’s past while investigating a murder. The narration is top-notch and the writing brims with vivid and compelling imagery. Hy Conrad’s bold imagination and sense of realism is strong in this narrative, the prose is delightful and the humanity of the characters unfolds with the progression of the plot. This is a thriller you won’t be able to put down.
